Energy efficiency was the focus of a project completed for the Maine Department of Transportation. We installed specialized, insulated wall and roof panels that are called an Insulated Panel System (IPS) and provided by A & S Building Systems. We also introduced radiant heating within the facility’s concrete floors.
With IPS, insulated panels provided substantial energy savings for the State of Maine at the metal maintenance garages by reducing their heating and air conditioning requirements.
These systems are the kind of Continues Air Barriers (CABs) that are being added into model energy efficiency codes throughout North America. As the A & S website notes: “CABs are critical to reducing air infiltration through the building envelope. Infiltration in buildings can have many negative consequences, including reduced thermal comfort, interference with the proper operation of mechanical ventilation systems, degraded indoor air quality and increased energy consumption.”
